Youth engagement in climate intervention research
This side event will focus on the critical need for youth engagement in climate intervention research and its implications for mitigating climate risks, especially in vulnerable regions of the Global South. By convening experts, scientists, and young leaders, the session will explore the role of climate intervention as a potential pathway to reduce the likelihood of exceeding 1.5°C of global warming, as emphasized in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment (AR6) report. Recognizing that exceeding this threshold poses significant risks to both humanity and ecosystems, the event will underscore the urgency of involving young voices in dialogues on climate research, policy, and intervention. The agenda includes an overview of the current science and policy framework for climate intervention, with a keynote address outlining the research behind 1.5°C pathways. A panel discussion will follow, offering participants a chance to engage directly with experts on the nuances of climate intervention in the Global South, where its potential impacts are most pronounced. Additionally, youth leaders will discuss the importance of incorporating young people’s perspectives in climate intervention policies and practices. Through knowledge exchange and collaborative dialogue, the event aims to empower youth participants to take informed action, foster cross-sector partnerships, and advocate for science-based solutions that support the climate resilience of their communities.
