Decolonizing knowledge production on climate-related (im)mobilities.

Decolonizing knowledge production on climate-related (im)mobilities.

Climate mobilities and (im)mobilities are some of the main topics of this generation. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that by 2050, over 200 million people will be displaced due to the adverse effects of climate change, mainly in the Global South. More strikingly are the statistics that show that 85% of people living in high climate risk areas will not move or are trapped due to economic, political, cultural and social vulnerabilities. Since 2013, a new wave of scholars have begun to study the phenomenon of climate (im)mobilities. However, over 80% of all scholars are linked to European research institutes, creating an essential bias on the (im)mobilities faced primarily by individuals in the Global South. Therefore, this event will feature young scholars in the field of climate (im)mobilities in the Global South who will highlight the need for expanding evidence-based, solutions-focused educational opportunities on climate-related (im)mobilities through critical, decolonial, feminist and environmentally-just approaches. The discussants will unpack pathways for disrupting unevenness and epistemic violence within knowledge production on climate-related (im)mobilities and evince the timely need to exchange knowledge, ideas and resources to support emerging leaders advance environmental justice in research and advocacy on climate-related (im)mobilities in their classrooms, workplaces, communities and beyond.

Moderator: Lauren Grant - Co-Founder of the International School on Climate Mobilities and (Im)mobilities Panelists: 1) Italo Ribeiro Alves - PhD student in the Peace and Conflict Department at University for Peace, M&E Specialist at Unicef, and former student of ISCM; 2) 2 more young Global Scholars and former students from ISCM (to be defined).
